Seeing The Light With #GELighting

I am your resident night owl.  When most people are winding down for the evening, I’m just getting started.  I think I get that from my mother.  She never was a morning person and neither am I.  Sure, I can get up early if there is a flight to be caught or I really have to go to the bathroom but other than that, I try not to.  I believe the sun should be up before me and not the other way around.

Because I do the majority of my work at night, I need great lighting in my office.  Unfortunately, I’ve been suffering with poor lighting for the past year!  The way my desk is positioned, my overhead light fixture is behind me and causes tons of shadows on my work space.  I have terrible eyesight as it is and by the end of the day, my contacts are screaming to come off of my eyes.  Add that to terrible lighting and you have just one of the excuses (never mind the Facebook and Pinterest browsing) I give when I don’t get everything done that I need to.  And why my desk is such a mess.

I finally decided to ditch the excuses and do something about my work area.  I couldn’t reposition my desk because of the location of the cable modem so I had to think a little differently.  The first thing that came to mind?  Improve the light bulbs I was using!  My husband always gets the cheapest light bulbs, usually the ones at the Dollar Store.  When it comes to light bulbs, I think you get what you pay for.  The bulbs never last that long and they give off a yellowish light.  You may not think the yellowish light makes a difference but try taking a picture and posting it online.  Good lighting makes all the difference.  And not having burned out light bulbs.

I set out on a mission to find a desk lamp and the purest white light bulbs I could find.  I also wanted to make sure my bulbs were energy efficient.  I’ve been trying to green up my life in baby steps and this seemed like a simple way to do so.  Unfortunately I couldn’t find any GE Energy Smart bulbs in the size/shape that I needed for my ceiling fan but I did decide on the GE Reveal.  These bulbs filter out dull, yellow rays that regular soft white bulbs give off.  That is super important when you’re taking pictures at 1 am in the morning!

I also stocked up on GE Energy Smart 60w Replacement bulbs.  I find it amazing that these bulbs have an estimated life of 9.1 years (based on 3 hours of usage per day).  However, the thing that everyone needs to be aware of is the CFL bulbs have mercury in them and they need to be properly disposed of.

I also picked up some GE Energy Smart Mini Spiral CFL bulbs for my new desk lamp.  You can see my full shopping experience in my Google+ album.

Not only am I making cosmetic changes to my work space, I’m also doing little things to save energy and in the process, save money.  Some of the habits that I’ve acquired since becoming a stay-at-home-mom are quite ridiculous.  Little things such as turning lights off when I leave a room or opening the blinds instead of flipping the light switch all add up in energy savings.  Add this to the money I’m saving by switching to CFL light bulbs and that’s easily a new purse or pair of shoes over the course of a year!  Just by switching out 12 60w light bulbs to CFL bulbs, I’m saving &78.84 annually and $432.00 over the life of the bulbs! (You can calculate your cost savings by using this awesome tool).  I mean, just watch the video below and tell me that all the change doesn’t make a difference!

Now that my office has better lighting, I’m able to work into the wee hours of the night.  And look, my desk somehow magically was cleaned up!
