A Quick and Easy Meal at Mariano’s

I keep telling myself that someday, I’ll have a weekend where I’m not rushing around. When I’m not trying to cram 72 hours worth of work and activities into 48 hours and that weekend will be sunny and warm instead of cloudy and cold.  This weekend is especially hectic since I’m leaving for Miami on Tuesday and that means I am multi-tasking and turning errand running into some fun time with my daughter.  Our first stop is to pick up a quick and easy meal at Mariano’s.

I had never been to Mariano’s before but I had heard great things about this grocery store. It’s the preferred grocery store by several of my co-workers who live in the city limits of Chicago. Mariano’s has a couple of stores out in the burbs so my daughter and I set off to the Arlington Heights location to pick up dinner for that evening and see what other fun stuff we could find. She’s a budding foodie and I enjoy introducing her to new foods. Though her palate isn’t as diverse as I’d like it to be (she still won’t eat corn), it’s fun to teach her about the different kinds of foods that she may not get exposed to at home or school. For instance, I don’t think I’ve ever bought a whole pineapple and she didn’t recognize what it was. She scoffed at it initially but then realized, this was one of her favorite fruits.

It was about 3:00 when we arrived at the store so by that time both of us were a little hungry.  We rushed over to the gelato counter and each of us got a mini cone. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they were only a dollar apiece! I didn’t have a rewards card so I picked one up from the cashier.  My daughter was having a bit of trouble getting all of her gelato in her mouth so I set off get our pizzas.

I think every family has their food traditions and ours seems to be having pizza at least one night during the weekend. Mariano’s makes wood-stone fired pizzas that are fresh and filling.  My daughter wanted cheese and I wanted the Bianca. I also stopped by Mariano’s awesome salad bar (they have organic greens) and let Brecken pick out the veggies for our salad. For less than $20 I was able to get a hot, freshly cooked meal for our family and had the added convenience of picking it up at the grocery store.

When we finally made it home and my husband asked his typical, “what’s for dinner,” I was able to whip out my pizzas and salads. In less than 5 minutes, dinner was ready and we were eating. The quality of Mariano’s is far beyond any other grocery store I have ever shopped at and is reflected in the food. When my husband asked if we had dessert, my daughter and I looked at each other and smiled.  Why yes, we did have dessert. :) And next time, we’ll pick up one of these.
