Having a four, almost five year old means a lot of things.

Hiking in the mountains.

Playing at the pool.

And periods of time where I just need to distract or entertain her while I try to get some work done. She’s really good at independent play and can spend hours with papers and markers, but sometimes, just sometimes, I use electronic gadgets to bid the time. It makes me extremely nervous to give her my Smartphone. That last thing I want is her texting or emailing my business colleagues and since she’s not the most coordinated kid on the block, I always worry about her dropping my phone in the water.

I’ve seen the Facebook posts a million times. One of my friends will talk about dropping their phone in the toilet (gross), in the pool, sink or whatever. The next thing you know they are submerging the phone in a bag of rice and hoping for the best.

With the Kyocera Hydro Vibe Smartphone I don’t have to worry about that. This Android-based phone is water resistant in 3′ of water for up to 30 minutes. That means if she takes the phone in the bathroom while she’s washing her hands, I don’t have to stress about her dropping it in the sink….or worse places. When she’s watering the plants, if she spills some water on the phone, it’s OK.

One of the great things about having the water resistant feature is I don’t have to get one of those bulky waterproof cases. You know, the ones that cost the same amount as a small village in Africa. That means when we go to the pool, I can get some great photos of her swimming and not have to worry about my phone weighing me down.

If you’re looking for a solid phone that has some great features, check out the Kyocera Hydro Vibe Smartphone from Sprint.

  1. That’s so awesome! It’s amazing how many phones I’ve ruined with just a little bit of water (seriously, a few drops) and I’m hoping my next phone is much, much tougher to harm!

  2. All the phones I’ve ever ruined have been due to water damage. I’ve heard so many great things about this phone. This is the type of phone I need.

  3. I’m totally the friend who’s dropped her phone in the toilet. This would be an awesome alternative.

  4. Wow! What a great idea! I drop my phone all the time and it’d be great to not need an extra case for water protection!

  5. That is genius! My kids have gone through many things due to dropping in the toilet – the most expensive item to date was MY Nintendo DS! This is definitely a must have phone with all 3 of my kids constantly stealing mine!

  6. I would totally LOVE a water resistant. phone! I took mine to Typhoon Lagoon this summer and was worried about it the whole time.
