Keeping Your Memories Safe With Picture Keeper

I became an avid picture taker once my daughter was born.  Wanting to capture every minute, I invested in a better point and shoot camera (I think my first P&S was a hand-me-down) and began snapping away.  It was so easy to take pictures and upload them to my computer.  So easy that now I have over 2000 photographs that only exist in one place.  On my PC.  That doesn’t include the 200 or so on my laptop or the photos my husband has on his laptop.  Wanting a simple solution that would keep all those memories safe, I was introduced to Picture Keeper.

Picture Keeper is a quick and easy way to backup all of your photographs.  All you have to do is insert the USB drive and follow the on-screen prompts.  There isn’t any software to install, no cords to mess with and the great thing is it’s compatible with PC and Mac.  The compatibility feature is great for me since my desktop is a PC and my laptop is a Mac and different pictures are stored on each device.  With the Picture Keeper I can consolidate them in one place and always have access to my photos.  What I also like is that if I’m at Walgreens and decide to print off some pictures, I can easily do so using the files on my Picture Keeper.  All I have to do is insert the USB and choose which ones I want.  Because Picture Keeper follows the same filing system you have on your computer, pictures are easy to find.  This gives me additional piece of mind to know that all the memories I’ve captured over the years are secure.  My wedding, my daughter’s first birthday and holidays spent with family are safe with Picture Keeper.

The Picture Keeper comes in a variety of different sizes.  I’m not a technical techy person and GB, MB, KB, etc. are all Greek to me.  The chart below gives you an idea of which product you’ll need, based on the number of photographs you have and the size of the files.

If all that’s Greek to you as well, on the Picture Keeper’s website they have a tool that will estimate the size of Picture Keeper that you need.

Before you use your Picture Keeper, there are a few steps you should do.  Remember, Picture Keeper copies your files just as you have them.  So if you have duplicate files on your computer, don’t like your file architecture, etc. then you need to do some cleanup.

  1. Delete duplicate files.  I had several duplicate pictures and didn’t even realize it.  I must have uploaded photos and then not deleted them from my camera.
  2. Delete unwanted photographs.  When my daughter was younger, I had to take 10-15 pictures in a row in hopes of capturing a smile.  I’ve kept every single one of those pictures over the years.
  3. Rename your files.  If you don’t like your current filing system, take the time to rename them so it’s easy to find the pictures you’re searching for.
To use Picture Keeper (for PC) just insert the device into a USB port and when the AutoPlay window will appear.  Double click to open the program and click on “start backup.”  It’s that simple.

From this screen you can also set up reminders and view your pictures.  Have more questions about Picture Finder?  Check out their FAQ section.

  26. Tami Valentine says:

being a scrapbooker, I have 1000s of pictures, but I don’t know really how to store them. I used to think that once I had them developed, I wouldn’t need them anymore….I got rid of so many! It wasn’t until my kids started taking technology classes in school…they’d come home and say they’d need a picture of them as babies, kindergarten, etc. They’d say, “my teacher said to e-mail it to her or we can put it in dropbox”. Dropbox? isn’t that the little opening in the door where mail would be slid? I had to send copies in with my kids. I really need to get into the 21st century technology!
