Photo A Day Challenge Day 2: Shadow

My shadow is turning eight this year. It’s hard to believe we’ve had her that long.  I remember the day we drove to Kansas City see if she was “the one.”  I had been pleading with my husband to get a third dog  for quite some time.  After pouting, begging and finally threatening to go to the Kansas Humane Society and adopt a dog, he finally agreed to get another dog if he could get one bred for hunting.  I agreed and our search began for the perfect hunting dog.

I searched online for various breeders and found a reputable breeder that I thought would be perfect. We drove to Oklahoma to see the pups and of course, I fell in love. I didn’t care about hunting pedigree or any of that nonsense, I wanted another dog to add to our family. It turned out that she only had boys left and because we had two 6-year old males at home, felt this wasn’t the best option.  Disappointed we headed back to Kansas and I continued my search.

Life got busy and the next thing I knew, months had passed by and still we didn’t have a third dog.  Then by chance, the physician I worked for was talking to one of our patients about my search for a labrador retriever.  It turned out that David (not his real name for HIPAA reasons), was a hunter and knew of a great kennel in the Kansas City area.  He had even bred his dog with one of their female dogs and they had just had a litter of puppies.

We ended up getting one of those puppies and named her Wrigley.  I later learned that her dad, Short Ugly Earl, had to be put down after a motor vehicle accident.  In all sorts of odd circumstances, a stray dog had run out in front of David’s truck and he swerved to miss him, injuring Earl who had been riding with him.  I’m proud to have one of Short Ugly Earl’s offspring and every time I look at Wrigley, I see him in her.

Even though Wrigley is crazy as can be, she’ll always be my little shadow.  She’s protective of me, follows me where ever I go and has earned her place in the family. I don’t know what I would do without my shadow.
