Why You Should Add Avocados to Your Diet

Why should you add avocados to your diet? It’s really a simple answer, because I said so.

add avocados to your diet

OK, maybe that only works on my 6-year old. But seriously, avocados are what nutrition experts consider a “super food.” One of those foods that is worthy of a cape. These nutrient dense fruits have a ton of vitamins and minerals, with relatively few calories. They contain monounsaturated fat (the good fat) and are naturally sodium and cholesterol free.

And even better, they came in at #1 on the Clean 15 list of foods that you don’t have to buy organic.

There are several ways to add more avocados to your diet. My favorite ways of adding them to meals include:

Dicing them up and adding to my morning breakfast.

I like warm food in the morning so usually I’ll usually make a breakfast skillet that consists of a few eggs, diced potatoes, fresh spinach and some herbs from my garden. To add some good fats and fiber, I’ll also dice half an avocado and sprinkle it over eggs. I’ll then top it with some salsa for a healthy, and filling breakfast.

When we’re camping, we always take a few avocados with us. Unless it’s a pancake and oatmeal kind of morning, we can figure out how to add avocados to our breakfast.

Replacing mashed avocados for mayonnaise.

When I was a kid I ate tomato sandwiches. Two pieces of white bread, some mayo, sliced tomatoes with lots of salt & pepper. Now that I’m an adult, I’ve ditched the white bread for wheat bread, replaced the mayo with a mashed avocado spread and have gone a little lighter on the S&P.

Drinking them in a smoothie.

People put all kinds of things in smoothies. When I’m running errands on my lunch hour and don’t have time to sit in one place and eat, I’ve been known to drink my lunch. Usually that drink involves the word “diet” but since I’m trying to eat a bit healthier to set a PR in a half marathon, I’ve been drinking smoothies.

Smoothie King has four veggie blend smoothies. Their latest flavor is Veggie Avocado Pineapple. At 460 calories for a 20 oz drink, it’s definitely not a low calorie but when you compare that to the calories of a burger and fries, 460 calories doesn’t sound so bad. The best thing about it? It tastes good. So good, my daughter will even drink it.

If you sign up for the Smoothie King newsletter, you can get a coupon for a 20 oz smoothie for $2.99.
